You Weren’t Exposed to Just TCE – Other Common Military Maintenance Chemicals

If you worked in motor pools, recovery operations, maintenance shops, flight lines, engine rooms, or armories, there’s a good chance you were exposed to more than just TCE.

Most of us didn’t have the luxury of using only one chemical. We used whatever was in the shop that day — and a lot of the time it was a mix. These solvents were often used the same way: open vats or dunk tanks, wiping parts and tools by hand, cleaning grease and oil off our own hands and arms, and working in shops with poor ventilation. Many of these chemicals were also dumped or leaked into the ground, just like TCE, contaminating base water supplies for years.

Here are the chemicals most commonly used alongside TCE in military maintenance work during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s (and in some cases longer):

Tetrachloroethylene (also called PCE or PERC) 

Very commonly used right next to TCE for degreasing metal parts. Same exposure routes — open containers, hand cleaning, inhalation. Strong links to kidney damage, liver problems, neurological issues, and cancer. Many bases had both TCE and PCE in the groundwater from the same disposal practices.

1,1,1-Trichloroethane (also called TCA or Methyl Chloroform)  

Widely used as a degreaser and electronics cleaner. Veterans describe it being used “like water” in shops before it was phased out. Neurotoxic and can cause organ damage. Very similar exposure story to TCE.

Methylene Chloride (Dichloromethane)  

Used for paint stripping and heavy degreasing. Strong neurological effects and organ toxicity. Often used in the same bays and by the same personnel who were using TCE.

Carbon Tetrachloride (Carbon Tet)  

An older but very toxic degreaser that stayed in use in some shops into the late 1970s and early 1980s. Severe liver and kidney toxicity. Many older veterans remember it clearly.

Benzene

Found in some fuels, solvents, and contaminated groundwater on bases. Strong link to blood cancers and bone marrow damage. Often present alongside TCE and PCE at contaminated sites.

Xylenes and Toluene

Common in paint thinners, adhesives, and general shop cleaning products. Neurological and respiratory effects. Part of the daily chemical soup in maintenance areas.

MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) 

Frequently used in aircraft maintenance alongside TCE for cleaning parts and as a paint thinner. Common on flight lines and in aviation shops.

Differences by Branch and Type of Work

While TCE was the main degreaser across all branches, the mix of chemicals and how they were used varied depending on what you were working on:

  • Army (Motor Pools & Vehicle Maintenance): Heaviest open-vat and hand-cleaning exposure. TCE, TCA, PCE, and Carbon Tet were commonly used in dunk tanks and for wiping parts, tools, and vehicles by hand. This matches the classic motor pool experience many of us had.

  • Air Force (Aircraft & Missile Maintenance): TCE was heavily used on flight lines for jet engines and aircraft parts, but MEK and methylene chloride were also very common for paint stripping and residue-free cleaning. More spray and wipe methods. Avionics and weapons systems techs often worked in tighter spaces.

  • Navy (Ships & Carrier Aircraft): TCE and PCE were used in ship engine rooms, machinery spaces, and for aircraft on carriers. Some anticorrosive paints and adhesives on vessels also contained these solvents. Confined space exposure in engine rooms was common.

  • Marines: Mix of ground vehicle work (like Army) and aviation work (like Air Force). Many Marines worked both.

  • Weapons Maintenance (All Branches): Often more spot cleaning and hand wiping in armories or field conditions. TCE, Carbon Tet, and specialized cleaners were used on guns, artillery, missile systems, and small arms.

Why This Matters

You may have been told (or assumed) that your problems came from “just TCE.” The truth is, most maintenance veterans were exposed to a solvent cocktail for years. These chemicals have overlapping health effects — kidney and liver damage, neurological problems (tremors, neuropathy, tinnitus, hearing loss), immune system disruption, and increased cancer risk.

When you’re building your claim or talking to your doctor, don’t limit it to TCE alone. Use the broader term “military solvent exposure” or “industrial solvent exposure during maintenance duties”. This covers the full picture of what actually happened in those shops, regardless of which branch you served in.

Practical Advice

  • Look in your service records for any mention of solvents, degreasers, parts cleaning, “trichloroethylene,” “perchloroethylene,” “carbon tet,” “MEK,” or general maintenance shop duties.

  • Buddy statements from guys who worked with you are gold. Have them describe what chemicals were used and how they were used (open vats, hand cleaning, confined spaces, flight line work, etc.).

  • If your base had documented groundwater contamination (many did), that helps tie residential exposure to the same chemicals.

  • When writing your Personal Statement or talking to a C&P examiner, be ready to say: “I was exposed to TCE and other industrial solvents daily while cleaning parts and equipment by hand in [motor pool / flight line / engine room / armory].”

You weren’t just exposed to one chemical in a controlled lab. You were soaked in a mix of toxic solvents day after day, year after year, often while living on or near the same base where they were being dumped.

That full picture matters — for your claim, for your doctor, and for every other veteran who’s still trying to figure out what the hell happened to his body.
